Birding for 9 Days in Kibale – Queen Elizabeth­ – Bwindi and Lake Mburo national Parks

Day One

Drive early morning  to Kibale forest located in  south western, the park has about 335 species of birds like the Grey-winged Robin, Red-winged Francolin, White-naped Pigeon, Red-chested Flufftail, Abyssinian Ground Thrush, Green-breasted Pitta, African Pitta and Tinny sunbirds enroute. You will also watch out for butterflies, and primate species. You will reach in the afternoon to have a late afternoon birding at the entrance of the Park. Overnight to Kanyankyu Tourist center. 

Day Two

Have breakfast to go for a full day birding in Kibale Forest on the guided Forest walks to search for birds like the superb Black bee-eater, Dark-backed and Yellow-mantled weaver, Willcock’s Honey guides, Olive Long-lived Cuckoos, Cassins Honey-birds and the forest is also a site for joyful Green bul, abundant here but scarce else where in Uganda. You will also see chimpanzees and monkeys. Have lunch to proceed to Bigodi Swamp in the late afternoon for birds like snowy-headed robin –chats, black and white casqued hornbill, yellow-rumped and yellow throated tinker-barbet and brown eared woodpecker. Overnight at Kanyankyu Tourist centre.

Day Three

Amorning walk in Magombe Forest for more bird species; drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park for birding around the Mweya Peninsular /Lake George. A Look through the window will reward you with game enroute; arrive afternoon. A boat ride in the afternoon on the Kazinga channel that combines lakes Edward and George will reward you with game like hippos buffaloes, and plenty of birds like the African Mourning Dove, rare shoebill, the beautiful black-headed Gonolek, Grey- capped warbler, the swamp flycatcher, the Great white pink –backed Pelicans, great and long tailed Cormorants, the African fish eagle, common sqaucco Heron. Overnight at night at Mweya Safari Lodge/ Camping/ Hostel.

Day Four

Drive to Ishasha through the Maramagambo forest-Kigezi area. Look out for game and birds on the road side enroute. You will arrive in Ishasha and go birding through the sector. Depending on the season this walk will reward you with tree climbing lions, Uganda Kobs and many birds such African Emerald Cuckoo, Verreaux’s Eagle-Owl, Crested Guinea fowl, Yellow bill, Red-headed Bluebill, Yellow throated Leaf love, Ross’ turaco’s and many others. Overnight at Ishasha tented camp.

Day Five

Drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National park – known for Albertine rift endemic bird species and also offers some of the finest montane birding in Africa . You will reach in the afternoon to embark on the walk through the wide, gently undulating track that runs south of Buhoma through forest towards Nteka. Expect birds like Oriole-Finch, Equatorial Akalat, Petit’s Cuckoo-shrike, white tailed Ant Thrush, Dusky Tit, Black and African Sooty Flycatchers and the Handsome Francolin. Overnight at the Gorilla Forest Camp / Buhoma homestead.

Day Six

Journey to Ruhija area for a few hours, you will see unique birds such as Abyssinian Crimsonwing, Green Tinker bird, Archers Robin chat, Red-faced Woodland warbler, Northern Olive Thrush and the rare and Beautiful Shelley’s Crimsonwing. Spend the afternoon birding along the Mubwindi swamp following the short trail. Expect to see birds such as the montane the beautiful Grey chested Illadopsis, Oriole, white headed Wood hoopoe, Carruthers’ Cisticola, Bar-tailed Trogon and the great blue turacos. Overnight at Ruhija (ITFC)/ Gorilla Forest Camp / Buhoma homestead.

Day Seven

Leave  early morning for L. Mburo National Park, you will bird enroute along the road.The park is dominated with tall grass savannah dotted with Acacia and Eurphobia trees which Harbour species such as Lead coloured Flycatcher, Black collared Barbet, Green-capped Eremomela, the red headed love bird, Narina Trogon and Fiery necked Lake Mburo NP is the Best place to see the typical of southern savannah species. You reach in the afternoon to bird around the Rwonyo camp. Overnight at Rwonyo.

Day Eight 
Erly morning game drive in search of birds  like Yellow breasted Apalis, Marico sunbird, Greater Blue-eared Starling, Red necked Spurfowl, black bellied bustard, Pennant winged nightjars and many more. Have lunch and go for a canoe trip to see water birds and other game such as Hippos and crocodiles. Expect to see birds like the papyrus Gonolek, lesser and greater Swamp Warbler, African water rail, White winged warbler, African fin foot, Hamerkop, Malachite Kingfisher, Northern Brown throated weaver, spur winged Plover, and the rare shoebill. Overnight at Rwonyo.

Day Nine

Have a game drive while you travel back to Kampala . You will have a lunch enroute and then proceed to reach Kampala in the afternoon. Overnight at Sheraton Hotel / Serena Hotel .
